“Lost at Sea” is meant as a type of “Vanitas Painting” which are intended to remind viewers of the frailty of life, the vanity of earthly achievements, and the inevitability of death. In this painting you see all the tools needed to plan a journey, from the study of books, a map, a compass, and a spyglass. But there is also a message in a bottle, which leaves the viewer wondering if this is a painting of all the careful preparation before a journey, or if this is the desk of a captain that has recovered some stranded souls last message of hope.
